Statement Lighting Ideas
Updated: 3 hours ago
The right light fixture can set the tone for a whole room. Here are a few ideas for statement lighting in New Jersey and New York homes, from two story foyers to formal dining rooms.
A chandelier for a two story foyer
Tall entries can handle a large fixture. A simple rule: add the length and width of the room in feet, and use that number in inches as a starting diameter. In a 15 by 15 foot foyer, that is about 30 inches. In a two story space, hang the fixture so its bottom is roughly level with the second floor, or at least 7 feet above the floor.
Over the dining table
Choose a chandelier about half to two thirds the width of the table, and hang it about 30 to 36 inches above the tabletop. For a long table, a linear fixture or a pair of pendants often works better than one round piece.
Pendants over an island
Two or three pendants spaced evenly, about 30 to 36 inches above the counter, give both light and character. Ribbed or smoked glass softens the bulb and adds texture during the day.
Sconces for a quiet statement
A pair of pleated or parchment shade sconces on either side of a sofa, bed or mirror adds warmth without taking up floor space.
Pick a finish that ties the room together
Aged brass: warm and soft, good with walnut and cream fabrics.
Bronze: deeper and browner, works well in traditional rooms.
Blackened steel: graphic and modern, good for clean, simple spaces.
Sized to your ceiling
Custom lighting means the fixture is built to your ceiling height, table length or wall, rather than the nearest standard size. Rob walks you through timing with your quote.
