The Sofa Everyone Wants in 2027: 10 Things to Know Before You Buy a Cloud Sofa

Comfort is the headline for 2027. At the fall High Point Market, the biggest furniture show in the country, the new sofas were lower, deeper and softer, with rounded corners and upholstery one exhibitor described as feeling "like a hug." Online, searches for legless "boneless" sofas are among the fastest growing in home design. Everyone wants the cloud sofa. Very few people have measured their doorway. Here are ten things to know before you sink in.

1. Know what you are actually buying

"Cloud sofa" gets stuck on almost every soft sectional now. The real thing has three traits: a deep seat, a low and soft back, and cushions that sink when you sit and spring back when you stand. A "boneless" sofa takes it one step further, with upholstery running all the way to the floor and no visible legs or frame. Both look relaxed. Both are very good at making a Tuesday disappear.

2. Choose seat depth for how you really sit

Seat depth is the number people skip and then regret. Standard sofas run about 20 to 22 inches deep. Designers call 23 to 27 inches deep, and 26 to 29 inches is true lounging territory. If you sit upright with a book or a laptop, stay around 21 to 23 inches. If you curl up, lie sideways or nap professionally, go 25 to 28. Past about 36 inches you have bought a daybed with arms, which is lovely, as long as you meant to.

3. Do not ignore the back

Low backs are a big part of the cloud look, and they are also why your neck files a complaint after the second episode. If you like support, ask for a slightly taller back or a second row of loose back cushions. You keep the silhouette and lose the stiff neck.

4. Ask what is inside the cushions

Softness on day one tells you very little. What matters is whether the cushions recover after a year of movie nights. The best builds pair a dense support core with a plush top layer, such as foam wrapped in a down blend. All feather feels dreamy and needs daily plumping. All foam keeps its shape and can feel firm. A blend gives you the sink without the sag.

5. Legs or no legs

A boneless sofa that sits right on the floor reads calm, grounded and very 2027, especially on a large rug. Slim legs lift the visual weight, make a smaller room feel bigger and let light pass underneath. Legs also give your robot vacuum somewhere to go. A low plinth base, like the Japandi sofa below, is a happy middle.

6. Go modular if life moves around

Modular sofas are having a moment for good reasons. Separate pieces are easier to deliver, you can rearrange a sofa and a chaise into an L, add a corner piece when you move, or split the set across two rooms. If your plans change often, modular is the sofa that changes with you.

7. Measure the path, not just the room

A deep sofa can be wide in every direction, including the one that has to fit through your front door. Measure doorways, hallways, stair turns and, in city apartments, the elevator. Then tape the full footprint on your floor and live with it for two days. If you keep stubbing your toe on painter's tape, the real sofa will win that fight too.

8. Scale it so it does not swallow the room

Designers want generous seating without visual bulk. A deep sofa pushes several extra inches into the room, so plan for it: keep about 36 inches for main walkways and roughly 16 to 18 inches between the seat and the coffee table. A lighter, low table helps a big sofa feel relaxed instead of crowded.

9. Pick a fabric that survives real life

The 2027 favorites are tactile and forgiving: chenille, slubbed linen, wool, mohair and soft performance weaves. Bouclé is easing off as the star fabric, so use it as an accent if you love it. On a deep, light colored sofa, ask for removable, washable covers. One glass of red wine is all it takes to become a believer.

10. Let color and light finish it

Paint makers are leaning green for 2027, from soft celery to olive, alongside earthy clay and terracotta. A sofa in olive, tobacco, clay or butter cream fits right in. Then light it like a lounge: low wall sconces at seated eye level and warm bulbs on a dimmer make a deep sofa glow at night instead of disappearing into a shadow.

Make it yours

A cloud sofa is the one piece where a single inch really matters. Seat depth, back height, cushion feel, legs or no legs, and a size that fits your wall and your doorway. That is exactly what custom is for: the look everyone wants, built to your size, your depth and your fabric.
