Outdoor Furniture for Shore Homes in NJ and NY
Updated: 3 hours ago
A porch, a pool terrace and a deck at the shore all have one thing in common: the weather gets a vote. Salt air, strong sun, sudden storms and sand are hard on furniture. Here is what to look for when you furnish an outdoor space at the shore.
Start with the frame
Teak is the classic choice near the water. Its natural oils resist moisture, and it weathers to a soft silver gray if you leave it untreated. If you prefer the honey color, oil it once or twice a season.
Powder coated aluminum is light, does not rust and is easy to move for storms or winter storage.
Woven rope over a metal frame gives a relaxed, coastal look. Choose a solution dyed outdoor rope so the color holds in the sun.
Choose cushions that dry fast
Shore cushions get wet. Look for solution dyed outdoor fabric over quick dry foam, which lets water drain through instead of soaking in. Removable covers with zippers make cleaning and off season storage much easier.
Size it to the space you actually have
Shore porches are often long and narrow. Pool terraces are usually wide open. Standard store sizes rarely fit either one well. Measure the space, note where doors swing and where people walk, and leave about 30 inches for walkways. A sofa or sectional built to your exact length fills a porch without blocking the path to the door.
Think about wind and storage
Lightweight chairs can blow around in a nor'easter. Heavier teak pieces, or a plan for where pieces go during storms and over the winter, saves a lot of trouble. Covers help, but make sure they breathe so moisture does not get trapped.
