How to Get a 5-Star Hotel Bedroom at Home

Great hotel rooms feel calm the moment the door clicks shut. That feeling is not magic, and it is not the tiny shampoo. It comes from a handful of choices hotel designers make every time, and you can make them at home. Here is how to get a 5 star bedroom without checking out by eleven.

1. Start with a taller headboard

Hotel headboards are often far taller than standard, somewhere around 48 to 65 inches, and that height is what makes the bed the star of the room. An upholstered headboard in velvet, bouclé or linen, with channels or simple tailoring, adds softness and gives you something comfortable to lean on.

2. Treat the bed as a system

Hotel beds feel cloudlike because they are layered: a supportive mattress, a thick topper and a protector. If your bed feels flat, add the missing layer before you shop for a whole new mattress.

3. Size up the duvet

A duvet that barely covers the mattress makes the whole bed look undersized. Go one size up: a king duvet on a queen bed, an oversized king on a king. The extra drape is what gives that plush, overflowing look.

4. Follow the pillow formula

Two sleeping pillows, two or three large Euro squares in front, and one accent pillow if you like. Six to eight in total. Enough to look styled, not so many that bedtime starts with a pillow avalanche.

5. Choose sheets like a hotel

Higher thread counts mostly add weight, not softness. Natural fibers in the 300 to 450 range feel crisp and cool. For the full hotel effect, use a flat sheet on the bottom too, tuck hospital corners and let a laundry service press them now and then.

6. Matching nightstands with drawers

Symmetry is the quiet backbone of every hotel room, and drawers are where the clutter goes to hide. Choose a pair of nightstands with the top within a couple of inches of your mattress height, so your water glass is where your hand expects it to be.

7. Light it like a hotel

Skip the single overhead light. Put a sconce or a lamp on each side of the bed, use warm bulbs and add dimmers. A small chandelier or a soft pendant overhead is the finishing touch. The goal is a room you can read in at ten and fall asleep in at ten fifteen.

8. Add a bench at the foot of the bed

A bench about two thirds the width of the bed gives you a place to sit, fold the throw and drop the bag that would otherwise live on the floor. If the room allows it, a lounge chair in the corner makes it feel like a suite.

9. Go big with the rug

A rug that stops at the nightstands looks like it shrank in the wash. Let it extend at least 18 to 24 inches past each side of the bed, so your first step in the morning lands on something soft.

10. Hang curtains high and wide

Mount the rod close to the ceiling and let the panels just kiss the floor, extending 6 to 10 inches past each side of the window. Add a blackout lining. The room looks taller, the windows look bigger and the sunrise waits until you are ready.

Make it yours

The secret of a 5 star bedroom is that every piece fits the room: a headboard tall enough for your wall, nightstands at your mattress height, a bench sized to your bed.
